This method involves placing a single or multiple suture loop (s) outside the joint, typically anchored at the lateral fabella of the femur and passed through a drilled tunnel in the tibial crest. When appropriately tensioned, these sutures help control excessive joint movement.

It is important to note that extracapsular stabilization is not an artificial ligament replacement. The suture serves as a stabilizer and sometimes will gradually loosen or break over time. The long-term joint support tends to rely on thickening of the joint capsule and scar tissue development. Peak recovery is typically seen between 10-12 weeks postoperatively

Lateral Suture vs. TPLO – Which is Better?

At VBJS, we almost exclusively recommend TPLO, but extracapsular stabilization may be considered for selected patients based on size, activity level, anatomy, concurrent conditions, and treatment goals.
